No one saw him come out, and no one found his body, so he and his mother are pronounced dead.
When he runs into the burning building to save his mother she throws him to safety. When a building explodes off into the distance he tries to hurry, but it was too late. The sludge Villain almost gets Katsuki, and Izuku is traumatized by the heroes who were going to let him die.
